My Malacca Day Trip

I left the hotel early to make the most of my day, for I was staying a bit far from the place I intended to go, to Malacca. The travel time and effort was worth it. The city is truly rich with Malaysian culture.

Fortunate for me, the sun was shining brightly at Malacca. I was able to make a swift tour, digesting everything my eyes can behold.

Being alone and far away from the world you've grown comfortable in, gives you the opportunity to step back and see the bigger picture.

Don't just be curious. Be curious with a purpose.

Had a wonderful day at Melacca. I hope I can go back here soon. I could take a rickshaw ride next time, a ride in style, that ride in colors.

Everland, South Korea

Everland . . .

Wow, what a wonderful place to be!

It's like the Disneyland of South Korea. My son had so much fun in Everland.

He was talking about the rides, the parades, the super large park which he can't seem to completely cover.

Everland Resort, is a theme park in Yongin, a city in Gyeonggi-do province, South Korea.

Everland is South Korea's largest theme park. With 8.6 million visitors, it ranked tenth in the world for amusement park attendance in 2007. Along with its main attractions, it also includes a zoo and a water park known as Caribbean Bay. It is operated by Samsung Everland, which is a subsidiary of the Samsung Group.

Sharing My Singapore Experience

Singapore is actually just a drive away from Malaysia, heheh.

Sentosa, which translates to peace and tranquility in Malay, is a popular island resort in Singapore. Located at the top of Mount Imbiah, the MegaZip Adventure Park is Singapore's first adventure park with one of the longest and steepest zip wires in Asia, a 12m high ropes course, a free-fall parachute simulator and a challenging climbing wall.

I was so happy just to have visited Sentosa, but was really fortunate to have even gone to the Adventure Park. I was ecstatic to have completed the day with a great escapade.

I took the super mega-zip challenge plus the para-jump free fall . . . yoohoo!

Floating Islands of Seoul, Korea

The Floating Island is a group of three large artificial islets below Banpo Bridge, on the Han River.

The project cost about 96 billion won. The entire facility is 9,900 square meters in size, including the connecting bridges. The largest islet is Vista, housing a 692-seat convention hall. The other islands are called Viva and Terra.

The place was opened to the public in April of 2011 as a Seoul landmark.

The pools of water are shaded by lots of giant trees and giant ferns (reminds me of the same foliage in the rain forest of Malaysia).

The Lantern Festival in Singapore

Bright colors greeted us at the streets of Singapore. T'was Lantern time. The Lantern Festival made our visit a feast to our eyes and to our camera lenses.

Loved the colors, loved the atmosphere. We got that "up" feeling. I momentarily forgot that my feet were a bit aching (that's putting it lightly of course) from walking for a couple of days due to my new bright blue-and-silver sandals. So that's a tip, wear footwear ready for walking battle.

Origin

There are many different beliefs about the origin of the Lantern Festival, however, it is certain that it had something to do with celebrating and cultivating positive relationships between people, families, nature and the higher beings that were believed to be responsible for bringing or returning the light each year.

Early Practices

Young people were chaperoned in the streets in hopes of finding love. Matchmakers acted busily in hopes of pairing couples. The brightest lanterns were symbolic of good luck and hope. As time passed, the festival no longer has such implications.

I am from the Philippine Islands, a country surrounded by water, beautiful beaches and blessed with lots of sunshine.

With the good deed of a friend, the gang was able to go and had a grand day at Anvaya Cove in Bataan and Hamilo Coast, Pico de Loro, Batangas.

A feel of nature . . . the sun, sand, sea, trees and mountains . . . wow!

At Anvaya Cove, there is a nature trail for you to enjoy plus a Zipline ride you can try with friends.

Though, how I wish I could go for a real kayaking adventure. Have not included it in my list of "to do's".

I've tried a banana boat ride but that's far from the thrills of kayaking.

Oh well, that day of more thrills and adventures will surely come. It will.

Safari Experience

At A' Famosa, I captured my Safari moments in pictures. I asked a number of staff there the favor of taking my photos for I was a lone traveler, but a happy one.

We were asked to ride a vehicle that goes around the place so we can see the lions, the tigers, the giraffes, roaming around, not minding us at all.

There were birds, peacocks, crocodiles, deers, bulls, elephants, monkeys and people, yup. I was not alone for there were people in groups. There was even a religious group who took the tour. (Tourist attractions visited: Genting, Malacca City, Batu Caves, A' Famosa, Melaka)

A place was allotted where the animals stayed inside fences. You just walk around ( good exercise) and of course, take souvenir photos.

I got to ride an elephant. I missed out the camel ride.

I was hopping from one area to the next, as time flew by quickly, forgetting about Jack, my loyal "teksi" driver, who I think took his nap.

It felt good to be here.

Malaysia, In Another Point Of View, From A Helicopter

I read an interesting article about Malaysia in the Yahoo News by SZA LES MO and it's worth sharing.

It mentioned that tourists can now enjoy a scenic bird's eye view of Malaysia by a helicopter tour package and would get to see "the magnificent architectural wonders, historical landmarks, cities, buildings, villages and plantations" in Malaysia from way above there in the sky.

The report says:

"Six travel agencies will be offering the high-end tour service initially under the 1Malaysia Helicopter Tour Packages which were launched by Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen at the Skypark Business Aviation Centre, Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport."

"The six travel agencies involved in the tour packages include Shajasa Travels & Tour Sdn Bhd, Elite Luxury Vacations (M) Sdn Bhd, Langkawi Helicopter Xtours and Kota Kinabalu Aerial Tour."

"The tours range from 15, 30 to 60 minutes and priced from RM1,250 to RM4,950, with the helicopters able to seat three to six people," she added.

Meaning to Travel

Olive, my friend, goes back and forth to Malaysia due to the nature of her work. However, she does not have the luxury of time to go around the beautiful country, she says. She stays in Kuala Lumpur and keeps an image of the Petronas Towers in her cellphone.

After my trip to Malaysia, she saw my photos and started sharing that she has not tried roaming around. I said she should not waste this rare opportunity. There must be a way somehow.

Many have been called, but few are chosen, I jokingly thought. We can all go to the same place but not see the same things for it is how we look at things that makes the difference. It is the experience that goes with the travel that makes the travel meaningful.

From last I heard, she went to Malaysia during the holidays with her husband. Now she knows how to put meaning to her travel.

Went to see some animal shows at Malacca. There were elephants playing basketball. Cats were walking on wire, lovely pink flamingos on parade . . .

Hoe about this big snake? Kinda reminded me of Britney Spears' music video where she had a snake hanging on her neck, singing and dancing.

Korean Food Made My Day, My Week

My son tells his encounter on Korean food beginning of 2011 . . .

In January of 2011:

So this week is definitely my Korean food week. I visited two Korean restaurants, very different, yet somehow having a common strand between them. The first is somewhere my family and I spent the weekend evening at, a restaurant we always go to, Maru. The other one is Mashitta's, a Korean-Japanese stall within the UP shopping center.

I tried three dishes, but only two were Korean. I definitely wanted to try their version of Bibimbap, a Korean rice dish topped with vegies and egg, in the order according to the 5-elements/ 5-colors. When it came to me, it looked like this.

Well, I was expecting something more pretty, but it did have all the required elements and colors, so it was fine. It tasted good enough, especially considering that the Bibimbap they have here does not have any meat! I was so horrified at first, but afterwards, I realized it was okay. It had an egg in the middle, with carrots and eggplants and of course, some kimchi. I quickly finished it up without any leftovers!

The other dish that I really had to try was the Egg Roll Kimbap. They had some in stock the day I visited, so I ordered that as well, but I was so full with the Bibimbap that I had to ask for a take out for this one. However, when I did share it with my mom and dad back at home that day, they said it was good. Personally, I thought it was good as well, with its tuna and carrot filling. My dad said it definitely needed a sauce of some kind, like soy sauce or kikkoman, and I'd have to agree on that.

Well, for a stall in UP, this was a good treat, and a peek into what Korean cuisine might be. But there really is no comparison between this and true Korean food, specially prepared in my fave Korean restaurant, Maru.

We started going to Maru last year, and there was even a point in time where my family would go there every Sunday. That's how good this place is. We love how there is such a variety of appetizers, and every visit, we get a treat of new sets of appetizers. For the appetizers this visit, we got a taste of a variety of spicy dishes, as well as some interesting palate cleansers.

The main highlight of the visit was trying so Dolsat Bibimbap, a version of Bibimbap with ground pork (yes! not vegetarian!) It was really good. It was even served in a hot stone bowl, which was so hot that it burned the rice at the bottom of the bowl. I'm usually not fond of tutong or burnt rice, but definitely this kind of burnt rice is really good. I even scraped it off the bottom because it was that good. I've heard in Korea, they would fight over who would get to scrape off the rice at the bottom of the bowl, so I guess even they appreciate it!

And the main course we had was some mackerel and some beef, which you wrap up in pieces of lettuce. It has this amazing smoky flavor to it, and you dip it in this wasabi sauce and it's awesome. It's might be salty for some people, but I think it strikes a good balance between salty and wasabi-y.

All in all, thank God for Korean food! Really a winner week for me!

Suria is the native Malaysian word for Sunshine.

Suria KLCC is a "1.5 million sq. feet (140,000 m²)" shopping complex. It is located at the base of the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur City Center, with anchor tenants: Isetan, Parkson Grand, Tanjong Golden Village, Signatures Level 2 Food Court and Marks and Spencer. It was opened on August 31, 1999.

It houses mostly luxury and fashionable shops, as well as cafes, restaurants, a twelve-screen cinema, a concert hall, an art gallery, and a Science Discovery Center, over 6 floors. It is almost directly underneath the Petronas Twin Towers, which is the third tallest buildings in the world (and the tallest twin towers). It is one of Malaysia's most popular tourist destinations.

Suria KLCC is accessible by a direct metro link from KL Sentral with the Kelana Jaya Line to KLCC LRT Station. It is also accessible from three major roads - Jalan Ampang, Jalan P. Ramlee, and Jalan Kia Peng. It also has a dedicated taxi rank, bus stop, and copious parking space. It is also connected to Kuala Lumpur International Airport via KL Sentral.

Yes, yes, birds of different feathers flocked together here in Malaysia. I was fascinated with the colorful birds, some big and some small. There were parrots, peacocks, ostriches, flamingos even chickens of a number of variety.

Melaka Holiday

Melaka, ah, truly a place of rich Malaysian culture. Before going to the heart of the city, I went to A' Famosa where I can be near to nature.

I read that a long long time ago, the last Sultan of Melaka, who took refuge in the hinterland, made intermittent raids both by land and by sea. This caused considerable hardship for the Portuguese, who conquered the city. The Portuguese built the fort named A' Famosa to defend the city. The original gate of A 'Famosa remains at present.

Now, its a place full of fun. I had an enjoyable experience there, spending my time watching animal shows. There was the elephant show where the elephants played basketball and kick-the-ball, the bird show where I got to see flocks of graceful flamingos and the funny Cowboy - Indian show, my favorite. Now I'm beginning to be like a child, a retarded one? Oh no, it was really enjoyable, I was laughing out aloud.

Malaysian Hotels, Rain forest, Casino at Genting Highlands

"A cool, cool morning welcomes me in Malaysia today." This was what I said to myself as I awaken that day. My, my, the air-conditioning was running all night. So, that's why it's cold.

That was an attempt to lighten up the mood.

It was actually a moment full of anxiety, for it was my third day in Malaysia and I have not made my final decision on my destination. Do I go here? There? How long would the drive be? How much will it cost me? How do I get there? What will I see there? Will I have fun there?

Continuing with my thoughts . . .

I want to make the most of this trip. My sight-seeing venture yesterday seemed like a flop to me. I did not see much of what I expected and I feel tired. Yup, I was tired of going around seeing buildings and structures. I wanted to be close to nature.

I then had a recollection of a phone conversation. A friend living at Miri, called me up to say "Hi, hello, how have you been." He was my high school classmate, whom I got connected a few months ago through Facebook. He found out I was in Malaysia. According to him Miri is a two-and-a-half plane ride to Kuala Lumpur. The call was much welcomed, for it made me feel at home in some sense. We had a long talk, trying to catch up with the decades of gap. Wow, we were really getting old. Life has been good to both of us, and even to our other high school batch mates.

According to Ed Cunningham, "Friends are those rare people who ask how we are and then wait to hear the answer."

I threw Peter an important question, important for me, that is. I asked him, if I were not to miss a place in Malaysia, what would that be? He instantly replied that it would be the Genting Highlands. He said that there are lots of rides there that children would love. Note, however that I do not have any little kiddo tagging along with me. I was a lone traveler remember?

So be it Jedi. This is my favorite line in Star Wars. Thus, it happened. I decided to go to Genting Highlands. Just go.

I took a taxi going there, for I do not know how to get there. All I know is that it is a 45-minute drive from where I was staying. I was willing to spend a little more. Based on my classmate Peter, it is a must-go, must-see, Malaysian tourist spot. I believe him. He's been in Malaysia for quite some time now.

The Genting Highlands, at 1700m above sea level in the Titiwangsa mountains, has a resort housing a number of hotels, a shopping mall, indoor and outdoor theme parks plus a casino. The temperature at 14°C to 25°C suggests that you should be ready with a jacket.

The Genting Skyway, the cable-car ride, from Genting Highlands to Gohtong Jaya, is said to be the longest sky way system in South East Asia and the world’s fastest as well. Whatever, I enjoyed the cable-car ride with the view of the rain forest below and the cool air and the clear skies above. I loved the giant ferns preserved for millions of years, they say. Age does matter sometimes, huh. (Tourist attractions visited: Safari, Genting, Malacca City, Batu Caves, A' Famosa, Melaka)

The First World Plaza features the Genting Sky Venture, claimed as the only free-fall skydiving simulator in Asia. That would have been a life-changing experience for me if I went to try that out. It is my dream to do para-gliding, an outrageous dream, I think. Too bad I was not able to try the free-falling thingy. (My dream to travel)

Great Opportunity for Thanksgiving

Rising early was what I did, so as to make the most of the day and see more of Malaysia. Jack, my friendly taxi driver promised me to show me a big mosque.

Driving on however, he decided to show me a very old Catholic church built in 1701. I was so surprised at the sight of the church. I was able to go inside the adoration chapel to give due thanks to the Lord for giving me this opportunity to be in a beautiful place, Malaysia.

Now, I was even blessed to see Singapore.

Hungry Today

"Hmmm. Something smells good," my eldest son was saying as he was descending the stairs of our house, from his room towards the kitchen. The kids are home today so I decided to bake brownies for them, even if I am feeling a little tired. I love it when they appreciate my cooking, or say anything good about me.

This is why I have this cake-mood as I work on my blog right now. I just can't resist posting these rows and rows of cakes I took pictures of in a big grocery store in Malaysia. Big and small round cakes and there are big square and heart-shaped ones too.

I went to the grocery to look for Malaysian spices, especially those used for Nasi Lemak, a delicious coconut-milk rice dish.

Malaysian Food

I love Malaysian food, thus even back here in the Philippines, I do eat Malaysian cuisine every now and then. I remember eating great breakfasts at the hotel during my trip. Nasi Lemak is always available. Yummy!

Rice tends to be a staple food in Malaysia as in most countries in the region. The rice eaten in Malaysia tends to be the local variety of rice or fragrant rice from Thailand, its northern neighbour. Quality Indian basmati is used in biryani dishes due to its long grained shape, fragrance and delicate flavour. Japanese short grain rice and others are slowly entering the Malaysian diet as Malaysians expand their culinary tastes to new areas.

Noodles are another popular food. Noodles such as "Bi Hoon"(rice vermicelli), "Kuay Teow"(soft fluffy flat rice noodles made of rice and translucent white in colour), "Mee"(yellow noodles), "Mee Suah" (very fine wheat vermicelli), "Yee Meen" (pre-fried noodles), "Langka"(transparent noodles made from green beans), and others provide a source of carbohydrate besides the ubiquitous serving of rice that accompanies every meal.

About Malaysia

Indian style bread such as naan, puri, roti canai, thosai and idli are commonly eaten by most Malaysians as part of breakfast. Western style bread is a relatively new addition to the Malaysian diet, having gained acceptance in the last generation.

Chicken is generally available from local farms and is a cheap source of meat.

A special type of chicken recipe in Malaysian cooking is called the "ayam kampung" (literally village chicken). These are free-range chickens which are allowed to roam instead of being caged. These chickens are generally considered to have higher nutritional value. They are scrawnier than their farmed counterparts, meaning they have less body fat. Cooking of kampung chicken is usually by way of steaming or preparation in a soup.

Duck and goose also form part of the Malaysian diet.

Satay chicken, grilled chicken with a peanut and coconut milk sauce, is the national dish of Malaysia.

Beef is common in the Malaysian diet though it is notable that followers of certain religions such as Hinduism and some forms of Buddhism forbid the consumption of beef. Beef can be commonly found cooked in curries, stews,roasted, or with noodles. Malays generally eat beef that is halal.

Pork is largely consumed by the Malaysian Chinese community in Malaysia. Malaysian Malays are by definition Muslim and therefore do not consume pork since Islam forbids it. Canned pork can usually be found in the non-halal sections of local supermarkets and hypermarkets, and fresh pork can be bought in some wet markets and some supermarkets and hypermarkets.

Mutton is also a part of the Malaysian cuisine. It generally refers to goat meat rather than sheep. The meat is used in dishes such as goat soup, curries, or stews. It is a popular ingredient in Malaysian Indian food.

Many types of seafood are consumed in Malaysia, including shrimp or prawn, crabs, squid, cuttlefish, clams, cockles, snails, and octopus. In general, members of all ethnic communities enjoy seafood, which is considered halal by Malaysian Muslims (and indeed most other Muslims) though some species of crabs are not considered halal as they can live on both land and sea. But most people do not take this as a staple or daily meal since it is expensive.

Fish features in the Malaysian diet and most local fish is purchased the day after it is caught. Frozen fish is generally imported. Such fish, namely salmon and cod, are well received on the Malaysian table but are not caught by local fishermen. Imported fish are frozen and flown in as pieces or as whole fish and usually sold by weight.

Cowboys and Indians

There were various entertaining shows (at A' Famosa at Malacca) to choose from. You can pick what you want to see and skip the rest. Schedules are announced, so you can roam around or sit down to watch any of the shows. Your call.

I escaped the cowboys but was caught by an Indian.

Surprisingly, I did enjoy the best, the Cowboys-and-Indians show. It was hilarious. There was suspense, action and a lot of shooting.

The cast performed well.

Fruits and Vegetables

There I was taking photos of the various fruits on the banquet table of our hotel, before I finally ate my meal.

Vegetables are usually available year round as Malaysia does not have four seasons. During the rainy season, sometimes vegetable yield decreases but does not stop altogether. Therefore, vegetables can be purchased throughout the year but are slightly more expensive at certain times of the year.

Malaysia's climate allows for fruits to be grown all year round. Most tropical fruits are either grown in Malaysia or imported from neighboring countries. The demand for fruits is generally quite high. Some notable fruits include durian, rambutan, mangosten, lychee, mango and longan.

I love the Batu Caves with the towering golden statue.

The place is the focal point of the Hindu festival of Thaipusam in Malaysia. In 2007, the festival attracted more than 1.5 million pilgrims, making it one of the largest gatherings in history.

Malaysia Day is only celebrated in the state of Sabah on 16 September to commemorate the formation of Malaysia in 1963.

The Batu Caves site serves as the focus of the Hindu community's yearly Thaipusam (Tamil festival). It has become a pilgrimage site for Malaysian Hindus and even Hindus from other countries like India, Australia and Singapore.

There are a number of holidays and festivities observed in Malaysia.

The most celebrated holiday is the "Hari Kebangsaan" (Independence Day), otherwise known as "Merdeka" (Freedom), on 31 August commemorating the independence of the Federation of Malaya in 1957.

Muslims in Malaysia celebrate Muslim holidays. The most celebrated festival, Hari Raya Puasa (also called Hari Raya Aidilfitri) is the Malay translation of Eid al-Fitr. It is generally a festival honoured by the Muslims worldwide marking the end of Ramadan, the fasting month. The sight of the new moon determines the end of Ramadan. This determines the new month, therefore the end of the fasting month. In addition to Hari Raya Puasa, they also celebrate Hari Raya Haji (also called Hari Raya Aidiladha, the translation of Eid ul-Adha), Awal Muharram (Islamic New Year) and Maulidur Rasul (Birthday of the Prophet).

The term "Hari Raya" literally means "Day of Celebration" — it is also occasionally used to refer to Eid ul-Adha in the form of "Hari Raya Aidiladha".

"Selamat Hari Raya" which means "Happy Eid" in Malay is the main greeting used by Muslims in Malaysia and Singapore.

Soon, I will be writing more about Singapore as I steadily make plans for my trip there this year, and that will be soon.

Singapore is a city-state in Southeast Asia. Founded as a British trading colony in 1819, since independence it has become one of the world's most prosperous countries and sports the world's busiest port. Combining the skyscrapers and subways of a modern, affluent city with a medley of Chinese, Malay and Indian influences and a tropical climate, with tasty food, good shopping and a vibrant nightlife scene, this Garden City makes a great stopover or springboard into the region.

Singapore is a small country on a small island, but with just over five million people it is a fairly crowded city and in fact second only to Monaco as the world's most densely populated country. The center of the city — consisting roughly of Orchard Road, the Riverside and a chunk of Chinatown — is known in acronym-loving Singapore as the CBD (Central Business District).

Hari Raya Aidilfitri

It is the Malay term for the Muslim festival of Eid ul-Fitr (also seen as Hari Raya Idul Fitri and Hari Raya Puasa, literally "Celebration Day of Fasting"). Hari Raya is also known as Lebaran. Muslims in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines celebrate Eid like other Muslims throughout the world. The term "Hari Raya" literally means "Day of Celebration" — it is also occasionally used to refer to Eid ul-Adha in the form of "Hari Raya Aidiladha". The main greeting used by Muslims in Malaysia and Singapore is "Selamat Hari Raya" which means "Happy Eid" in Malay. Another greeting is "maaf zahir dan batin" which translates loosely to "I seek forgiveness (from you) physically and spiritually", for Hari Raya is a time to reconcile and renew relationships with others.

Promotions and Decorations
In big cities and towns, shopping malls and commercial centers may hold big promotions and price discounts for festive shoppers as people purchase clothes and supplies. Decorations are hung in public areas and Hari Raya songs will be played in shopping complexes. The media, such as the television may host various programs in conjunction with the celebrations.

Returning to One's Hometown
Many people also traditionally return to their hometown generally from big metropolitan cities to rural areas. This is known as balik kampung — literally going back to one's home town to celebrate Hari Raya with family and friends.

Fasting
During the Muslim month of Ramadan leading up to Hari Raya, it is mandatory for Muslims to fast from dawn to dusk. All Muslims except the young, old or infirm must fast.

Breaking the Fast
Widely, markets, or 'Ramadan bazaars' are held in many areas around the country, where all sorts of food and kuih — traditional Malay delicacies — are sold for breaking fast or buka puasa.

Preparation during the Eve
On the eve of Hari Raya, Muslims will recite the takbir, which is held in mosques and surau (smaller place of worship). In some communities, there will be congregations reciting the takbir from house to house.

Usually on the eve of the celebrations, family members, especially mothers and housewives, become busy preparing food, cakes, sweets, biscuits and various delicacies to be served on the day of Hari Raya. Delicacies such as ketupat or rice cake and a meat cuisine called rendang are among the most famous cuisines that are served during this day. Other family members may help in other chores such as decorating and cleaning up the house.

Customs
Days before Hari Raya, house compounds, particularly those in the countryside may be lit up with oil lamps known as pelita or panjut. This display of oil lamps will reach its height on the 27th night of Ramadan, called the Tujuh Likur night. 'Likur' literally meaning a figure between 20 and 30, hence 'tujuh likur' means twenty seven. Originally during the early days of the arrival of Islam among the Malays, the purpose of lighting the oil lamps was to attract spirit of passed relatives and angels to descend to people's homes during the night of Lailatulqadar. Nowadays, the oil lamps are lit solely for decorative purposes.

It is customary for Malays to wear traditional Malay costumes. The dress for men is called baju Melayu while the women's are known as baju kurung and baju kebaya. Traditional textiles such as songket and batik are worn favorably during this day.

Day Activities
Muslims will attend Eid prayer in the morning and consecrate together harmoniously while taking the chance to meet and greet each other. Once the prayer is done, it is also common for Muslims in Malaysia to visit the grave of their loved ones. During this visit, they will clean the grave, perform the recital of the Yasin — a chapter (surah) from the Qur'an and also the tahlil or prayers for the deceased. All these are done in hope that their loved ones are blessed by God and they are spared from the punishment in the grave.

The rest of the day is spent visiting relatives or serving visitors. Hari Raya is a very joyous day for children for this is the day where adults are extra generous. Children may be given token sums of money, also known as duit raya from their parents and elders.

Night Activities
During the night, there are often celebrations with sparklers and firecrackers. Some Malay children turn to home-made firecrackers such as meriam buluh (bamboo cannon) as alternatives to commercial fireworks. Usually, the lighting of firecrackers begins a few days before the end of Ramadan, and continues for about a week afterwards.

I loved being alone in the island. It's called "Monkey Island", at A' Famosa in Melacca.

Actually, I can't find the monkeys. Do you think there is a possibility that they were referring to the visitors as the monkeys, that's why the name Monkey Island? Okay, just fooling around a bit.

I was there standing in front of the water, feeling serene. I found a bench where I sat down. I also found a lady staff. Your guess is right, she took my photo, of course, for souvenir.

I spent some more exhilarating moments at this place, watching peacocks' tails go wishy-washy to the left then to the right, nice rhythm.

I strolled around, deeply inhaling the cool fresh air. What a way to de-stress. This is great! I'm blessed.

A little later I saw the raft approaching the island, ready to pick up a relaxed, refreshed, grateful "me".

My memories of Malaysia? A lot, but never to forget . . . food . . . good eats . . . coconut rice. Well, can't go without these. Malaysian food truly made my visit there a treat. I love the rice, the sambal concoction, fried fish dishes, the fresh tropical fruits. I could go on and on. The viands there were spicy because the native food goes with sambal or with curry sauce.

I ate Nasi Lemak for dinner and even for breakfast. It's practically available anytime and anywhere. However, if you wanna have a break from the native taste, you can eat pasta or burger or even pizza. There are lots of restaurants to choose from. I ate at Friday's for one of my dinner nights.

I love breakfast, but come to think of it, I don't remember any fascinating lunch. I was busy sight-seeing at that time of the day that I am suppose to have lunch. So, my tummy rests at noon. I take light meals and do my exercise, walking and climbing stairs. Still, I gained weight. Again, no worry, just savor the moment and the food, I told myself. (My sight-seeing adventures)

I wanted to make the most of my trip by observing, absorbing and photo-taking, heheh. Most of the pictures I took myself, while some by the tourists I encountered and the rest by Jack. Remember Jack?

I was able to move around Malaysia alone by way of taxi. Well, I was not really alone 'coz I made a new friend. Jack is the Malaysian taxi driver I met on my second day in Malaysia. He is my tourist guide, my photographer, my driver, my story-teller and friend.

Sight Seeing Tours at Kuala Selangor

There is one significant place I skipped going, when I went to Malaysia. That is Kuala Selangor where I am suppose to have dinner and see lots and lots of fireflies. It was raining the night I was scheduled to go and I got a little tired from my day tour. I planned to go the next day but unfortunately I was already set to go to another spot.

But if ever I return to Malaysia, I would definitely visit Kuala Selangor plus the wonderful resorts.

It is good to travel if given the opportunity. My trip to Malaysia went well and it was a wonderful trip. I do hope I can come back.

Asia has its own beauty, both the place and the people. The food has its own tempting taste, the music as well.

Malaysia, truly Asia, my memories of the place will be like a deposit in my heart and mind's bank that will be earning interest as time goes by and as I travel to other places in the world.

The holidays are over, and I suddenly remembered my shopping experience (more on window shopping, I think, and roaming around out of curiosity) at Malaysia. One of the interesting shopping spots I got to visit was Jalan Petaling. It's the Chinatown of Malaysia.

Petaling Street (Malay: Jalan Petaling) is a Chinatown located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is infamous for pirated clothes and accessories along with bootleg DVDs and CDs. Petaling Street however does not exclusively offer pirated products. Haggling is a common sight here and the place is usually crowded with locals as well as tourists.

The area has dozens of restaurants and food stalls, serving local favorites such as Hokkien mee, Ikan bakar (barbecued fish), asam laksa and curry noodles. Traders here are mainly Chinese but there are also Indian, Malay, and Bangladeshi traders.

The original Chinatown centered on Market Square. High Street, now known as Jalan Tun H.S. Lee, became increasingly popular as it was higher than the rest of the town and therefore less prone to floods. The wealthier and more ornate shop houses were built north of Jalan Cheng Lock, closer to the business center.

Kuala Lumpur was a typical pioneer town at the turn of the century, filled with a rough and tough population that was largely male.

They were largely Cantonese and Hakkas who came to the city because of the tin trade, working as coolies in the mines. They were governed by Chinese Kapitan or headmen. The most famous Chinese Kapitan is Yap Ah Loy, a Hakka.

In 1870, civil war erupted with the Chinese community being split along partisan lines into the Cantonese Ghee Hin and the Hakka Hai San secret societies. The British were called in to help end the strife but many of the buildings in the settlement were burnt down or severely damaged.

During the Selangor Civil War, the tin mines were abandoned and when the miners returned after the war, they found that the mines were flooded and therefore could not work. Yap Ah Loy persuaded the miners and coolies to remain in KL and the Malays in surrounding districts to grow rice and other garden products. He opened a Tapioca Mill in Petaling Street where the tubers from his farms were brought here to be ground into flour. Petaling Street is still fondly called ‘Chee Cheong Kai’ in Cantonese which means starch factory street.

There is a McDonalds on the first shop lot of Petaling Street. Located inside Petaling street is a three-star business-class and hostel-like: Hotel Malaya and Swiss Inn Hotel, and no frills hotel, Stayorange Hotel. Also near there is a Chinese bookshop and a few stalls selling Hainanese chicken rice and noodles. A small longan stall is also located there.

Nearby is Masjid Jamek, an old mosque of Moorish architecture while a tourist spot known as Central Market is within walking distance. Also nearby are the Pasar Seni LRT station of the Kelana Jaya Line and the Maharajalela Monorail station.

One of the most famous landmarks, the Sri Mahamariamman Temple, Kuala Lumpur, is located along Jalan Tun H.S. Lee is KL's chinatown. It is one of KL's oldest and richest Hindu temples. It receives many devotees and tourists daily.

In 2003, the road underwent a major RM11.3mil face lift with two large Chinese arches placed at both ends of the street to welcome visitors. It still pulls in many tourists, who go there to shop and will be regarded as a heritage site.

However, Petaling Street is still the best place to shop for counterfeit branded products and has large selection of local Chinese cuisine. For buyers, it is often possible to negotiate the price tag of an item such as watches, clothing and all counterfeit items.

Today the iconic "Green Dragon" covers Petaling Street.

Butterfly Favor

Suddenly, I had this flashback when I was a schoolgirl, just enjoying the school grounds wherein a large portion were covered with grass. I would see some mushrooms sprouting from the grass, especially after the rain. When the sun is up, the grass is fresh, attracting golden dragonflies and bright-colored butterflies. Birds, in a flock also painted the blue sky.

Nature is full of God's "I love you's".

Coming to Malaysia, I did not let the opportunity to visit the Butterfly Garden pass by. I've seen something similar in Hong Kong.

Being with a lot of fluttering butterflies all around, not frightened by visitors, felt invigorating. I myself felt so free, like being one with the colorful creations, which started as small crawling caterpillars.

The garden was designed with small bridges and mini waterfalls. There was even an area where cocoons where kept and there were designated feeding boxes with flowers and fruits.

In my recent trip, I was fortunate to have visited Europe. I did some review of notes on my experiences there with that I had in Malaysia. Well, I wasn't able to see live animals in Europe, like my camel friend here. I did enjoy the pigeons. Europe is rich in structures and architecture. Malaysia is more green, even in the city. Sun, water, trees . . . that's how I remember Malaysia. Who knows, I may come back in Malaysia sooner than I think. That would be exciting! See you Jack, remember him?

Malaysia is well-endowed with natural resources in areas such as agriculture, forestry and minerals. In terms of agriculture, Malaysia is one of the top exporters of natural rubber and palm oil, which together with sawn logs and sawn timber, cocoa, pepper, pineapple and tobacco dominate the growth of the sector. Palm oil is also a major generator of foreign exchange.

Regarding forestry resources, it is noted that logging only began to make a substantial contribution to the economy during the 19th century. Today, an estimated 59% of Malaysia remains forested. The rapid expansion of the timber industry, particularly after the 1960s, has brought about a serious erosion problem in the country's forest resources. However, in line with the Government's commitment to protect the environment and the ecological system, forestry resources are being managed on a sustainable basis and accordingly the rate of tree felling has been on the decline.

In addition, substantial areas are being silviculturally treated and reforestation of degraded forestland is being carried out. The Malaysian government provide plans for the enrichment of some 312.30 square kilometers (120.5 sq mi) of land with rattan under natural forest conditions and in rubber plantations as an inter crop. To further enrich forest resources, fast-growing timber species such as meranti tembaga, merawan and sesenduk are also being planted. At the same time, the cultivation of high-value trees like teak and other trees for pulp and paper are also encouraged. Rubber, once the mainstay of the Malaysian economy, has been largely replaced by oil palm as Malaysia's leading agricultural export.

The Genting Sempah-Genting Highlands Highway is a main highway from Genting Sempah to Genting Highlands, Malaysia's famous mountain resort and entertainment parks. Genting Sempah-Genting Highlands Highway was used to be a private highway owned by Genting Highlands Resort. The construction of the highway was regarded as one of the most astonishing engineering project in Malaysia. However, frequent landslides at the highway during recent years have caused the highway to be recommissioned as a federal road by Malaysian Public Works Department in 2005.

Genting Highlands is a mountain peak within the Titiwangsa Mountains on the border between the states of Pahang and Selangor of Malaysia and is home to a famous mountain resort by the same name, which can be reached by car from Kuala Lumpur in one hour. It is also accessible by the world's fastest and South East Asia's longest cable car called Genting Skyway. In 2006, the resort had 18.4 million visitors. Genting Highlands was founded by the late Lim Goh Tong in the late 1960s. Currently, this resort is being lead by Lim Goh Tong's son, Lim Kok Thay who is also the current president and CEO of Star Cruises company.

It is sometimes informally known as the Las Vegas of Malaysia, dubbed the "City of Entertainment", as it has the only legal land-based casino in the country and is run by Resorts World Bhd, a subsidiary of Genting Group. The resort, Genting Highlands Resort, also features many hotels owned by Genting subsidiaries including Awana Genting, First World Hotel, Genting Hotel, Highlands Hotel, Resort Hotel and Theme Park Hotel. Facilities in this resort include two theme parks, a "Ripley's Believe It or Not" Museum, a wind-turbine sky diving simulator, golf courses and shopping malls.

There is a computerized system outside First World Hotel which can automatically calculate the number of parking-bays left in four hotels; First World Hotel, Genting Hotel, Highlands Hotel and Resort Hotel.

Genting Highlands is also home to a 100 million year old forest.

A Trip to Malacca

It was raining during the early part of the day when I left the hotel. Fortunate for me, the sun was shining brightly at Malacca. The city is a bit far from where I was staying, so we left very early. The travel was worth it. The place is truly rich with Malaysian culture.

I was able to make a swift tour, digesting everything my eyes can behold. At the park, there are a number of colorful rickshaws that you can ride to take you around the area and have some photo shoots. The people are amiable.

Bird Watcher

Wow, I miss blogging. Just returned home from Europe. Back with the birds!

I visited the commercial squares in Europe. This one was in Portugal. The birds won't fly, looks like they're heavy from getting fed by the tourists there (probably pizza crumbs).

Birds . . . they're great to watch when in a flock. I love watching them fly together. At home, in the Philippines, I am so blessed to have a view of a flock of flying birds every afternoon, an hour before sunset. Lately, I discovered the same flock fly after sunrise, when I walk my dogs in the morning. What a lovely world!

I sure had a greater time with the birds here in Malaysia, at the Batu Caves, where they were more in number during my visit and had more energy to flap their wings.

Even my hotel in Malaysia has flying birds as motif on the walls. Cool! Fly on!

Church Finder

That day, I saw a big mosque in the city. Jack, my "teksi" driver said there is a bigger mosque that he can show me. Later on in the afternoon, Jack changed his mind and brought me to a Catholic church instead. He said we came there so I can pray. I was a little disappointed not to see the grand mosque like he said earlier but it was a good suggestion from him that I pray here.

We went to St.Peter's Church in Melaka (or Melacca).

The church was constructed in 1710 under the Dutch administration. It is the oldest Catholic church in Malaysia. Its facade and decorative embellishment is a mix of both eastern and western architecture. Its bell was delivered from Goa in 1608.

The church was closed. I headed for the adoration chapel instead where I offered my thanksgiving. I was so thrilled with my trip here in Malaysia. I was so happy that I even had this opportunity to visit a church and pray. Jack's idea was great after all.

Local Malaysian Foods

Malaysian foods, got hooked with them. Love the local food such as Nasi Lemak and Nyonya. The tropical fruits in season are also great.

Nasi Lemak is rice steamed with coconut milk to lend it special fragrance. It is served with anchovies, peanuts, cucumber and a chili paste known as "sambal". The mamak variety of "sambal" tends to be a bit more spicy whereas the malay version of "sambal" in a nasi lemak tends to be on the sweet side.

Nyonya food was developed by the Peranakan people of Malaysia and Singapore. It uses mainly Chinese ingredients but blends them with South-East Asian spices such as coconut milk, lemon grass, turmeric, screwpine leaves, chillies and sambal. Tin and petroleum are the two main mineral resources that are of major significance in the Malaysian economy. Malaysia was once the world's largest producer of tin until the collapse of the tin market in the early 1980s. In the 19th and 20th centuries, tin played a predominant role in the Malaysian economy. It was only in 1972 that petroleum and natural gas took over from tin as the mainstay of the mineral extraction sector. Meanwhile, the contribution by tin has declined. Petroleum and natural gas discoveries in oil fields off Sabah, Sarawak and Terengganu have contributed much to the Malaysian economy.

Other minerals of some importance or significance include copper, bauxite, iron-ore and coal together with industrial minerals like clay, kaolin, silica, limestone, barite, phosphates and dimension stones such as granite as well as marble blocks and slabs. Small quantities of gold are produced.

Mosque Image, Grand Mosque, Mosque Minaret

I am so thrilled to see the different mosques in Malaysia, but mostly just from afar. I was no able to go inside, though I was able to roam around in the vicinity. They were large structure of awe and beauty.

Another grand mosque in Malaysia is the Ubudiah Mosque in Kuala Kangsar, which I was not able to see, thus no photo. All the photos in my site are my personal photos taken during my trip.

This is the Masjid Negara, the national mosque of Malaysia. Its main roof is symbolically shaped like an open umbrella (above photo) while the high minaret is shaped like a closed umbrella (photo below).
The Masjid Negara is the national mosque of Malaysia, located in Kuala Lumpur. It has a capacity of 15,000 people and is situated among 13 acres (53,000 m2) of beautiful gardens. The original structure was designed by a three-person team from the Public Works Department - UK architect Howard Ashley, and Malaysians Hisham Albakri and Baharuddin Kassim. Originally built in 1965, it is a bold and modern approach in reinforced concrete, symbolic of the aspirations of a then newly-independent Malaysia.

Its key features are a 73-meter-high minaret and an 18-pointed star concrete main roof. The umbrella, synonymous with the tropics, is featured conspicuously - the main roof is reminiscent of an open umbrella, the minaret's cap a folded one. The folded plates of the concrete main roof is a creative solution to achieving the larger spans required in the main gathering hall. Reflecting pools and fountains spread throughout the compound.

My first tour day in Malaysia was spent going around the city, in Kuala Lumpur. I was so eager that I went hopping from one place to another.

I went to a tourist shop where I bought a pair of violet sunglasses, what fun! I was able to drop by several mini showcase factories, but actually they are shops where they encourage tourists to buy. Included in the list are sites manufacturing chocolates, leather goods, batik cloth and dresses and one that makes and sell pewter products, where I got my mom an anklet.

I went to the King's Palace where visitors were not allowed. But the guard made my day by letting me have a photo with him. You cannot talk to the guards, they just stand there, not at all annoyed with critters like me.

What amazes me is the blending of buildings and structures with nature, lots of greens and lines of trees. Truly lovely!

Public Holidays in Malaysia

Typical festive fare during Hari Raya Puasa or Hari Raya Haji: beef soup, ketupat (compressed rice cubes), beef rendang and sayur lodeh.

Malaysians observe a number of holidays and festivities throughout the year. Some holidays are federal gazetted public holidays and some are public holidays observed by individual states. Other festivals are observed by particular ethnic or religion groups, but are not public holidays.

The most celebrated holiday is the "Hari Kebangsaan" (Independence Day), otherwise known as "Merdeka" (Freedom), on 31 August commemorating the independence of the Federation of Malaya in 1957, while Malaysia Day is only celebrated in the state of Sabah on 16 September to commemorate the formation of Malaysia in 1963. Hari Merdeka, as well as Labour Day (1 May), the King's birthday (first Saturday of June) and some other festivals are federal gazetted public holidays.

Muslims in Malaysia celebrate Muslim holidays. The most celebrated festival, Hari Raya Puasa (also called Hari Raya Aidilfitri) is the Malay translation of Eid al-Fitr. It is generally a festival honoured by the Muslims worldwide marking the end of Ramadan, the fasting month. The sight of the new moon determines the end of Ramadan. This determines the new month, therefore the end of the fasting month. In addition to Hari Raya Puasa, they also celebrate Hari Raya Haji (also called Hari Raya Aidiladha, the translation of Eid ul-Adha), Awal Muharram (Islamic New Year) and Maulidur Rasul (Birthday of the Prophet).

Chinese in Malaysia typically celebrate festivals that are observed by Chinese around the world. Chinese New Year is the most celebrated among the festivals which lasts for fifteen days and ends with Chap Goh Mei. Other festivals celebrated by Chinese are the Qingming Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival. In addition to traditional Chinese festivals, Buddhists Chinese also celebrate Vesak.

The majority of Indians in Malaysia are Hindus and they celebrate Diwali/Deepavali, the festival of light, while Thaipusam is a celebration which pilgrims from all over the country flock to Batu Caves. Apart from the Hindus, Sikhs celebrate the Vaisakhi, the Sikh New Year.

Other festivals such as Good Friday (East Malaysia only), Christmas, Hari Gawai of the Ibans (Dayaks), Pesta Menuai (Pesta Kaamatan) of the Kadazan-Dusuns are also celebrated in Malaysia.

Despite most of the festivals being identified with a particular ethnic or religious group, all Malaysians celebrate the festivities together, regardless of their background. For years when the Hari Raya Puasa and Chinese New Year coincided, a portmanteau Kongsi Raya was coined, which is a combination of Gong Xi Fa Cai (a greeting used on the Chinese New Year) and Hari Raya (which could also mean "celebrating together" in Malay. Similarly, the portmanteau Deepa Raya was coined when Hari Raya Puasa and Deepavali coincided.

Malaysia is a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multilingual society. The population is 28 million. Figures from 2007 show the population consisting of 62% Bumiputeras, 24% Chinese, 8% Indians, with other minorities along with foreigners.

The Malays, who form the largest community, are defined as Muslims in the Constitution of Malaysia. The Malays play a dominant role politically and are included in a grouping identified as bumiputra. Their native language is Malay (Bahasa Melaysia), which is the national language of the country. However, English is also widely spoken in major towns and cities across the country.

The largest non-Malay indigenous tribe is the Iban of Sarawak, who number over 600,000.

The Chinese population in Malaysia are mostly Buddhist (of Mahayana sect) or Taoist, although some of the younger generations are choosing Christianity as their religion. The Chinese community in Malaysia speak a variety of Chinese dialects including Mandarin Chinese, Hokkien, Cantonese, Hakka, and Teochew. A large majority of Chinese in Malaysia, especially those from the larger cities such as Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Ipoh, Klang and Penang speak decent English as well. There has also been an increasing number of the present generation Chinese who consider English as their first language. The Chinese have historically been dominant in the Malaysian business and commerce community.

The Indians in Malaysia are mainly Hindu Tamils from southern India whose native language is Tamil.

Eurasians, Cambodians, Vietnamese, Thais, Bugis, Javanese and indigenous tribes make up the remaining population.

In addition, there have been many foreigners and expatriates who have made Malaysia their second home, also contributing to Malaysia's population.

The Thaipusam Festival

The Batu Caves site serves as the focus of the Hindu community's yearly Thaipusam (Tamil festival). It has become a pilgrimage place for not only Malaysian Hindus, but Hindus worldwide from countries such as India, Australia and Singapore.

A procession begins in the wee hours of the morning on Thaipusam from the Sri Mahamariamman Temple, Kuala Lumpur leading up to Batu Caves as a religious undertaking to Lord Muruga lasting eight hours. Devotees carry containers containing milk as offering to Lord Muruga either by hand or in huge decorated carriers on their shoulders called 'kavadi'.

The kavadi may be simple wooden arched semi-circular supports holding a carrier foisted with brass or clay pots of milk or huge, heavy ones which may rise up to two metres, built of bowed metal frames which hold long skewers, the sharpened end of which pierce the skin of the bearers torso. The kavadi is decorated with flowers and peacock feathers imported from India. Some kavadi may weigh as much as a hundred kilograms.

After a bath in the nearby Sungei Batu (Rocky River), the devotees wend their way to the Temple Cave and with remarkable endurance they climb the flights of stairs to the temple in the cave. Devotees use the wider centre staircase while worshippers and onlookers throng up and down those balustrades off on either side.

When the kavadi bearer arrives at the foot of the 272 step stairway leading up to the Temple Cave, the devotee has to make the arduous climb against gravity- against the press of the bustling masses.

Priests attend to the kavadi bearers. Consecrated ash is sprinkled over the hooks and skewers piercing the devotees flesh before they are removed. No blood is shed during the piercing and removal.

In 2007, the festival attracted more than 1.5 million pilgrims, making it one of the largest gatherings in history.

Batu Caves

Rising almost 100 m above the ground, Batu Caves temple complex consists of three main caves and a few smaller ones. The biggest, referred to as Cathedral Cave or Temple Cave, has a 100 m-high ceiling, and features ornate Hindu shrines. To reach it, visitors have to climb a steep flight of 472 steps.

At the base of the hill are two more cave temples, Art Gallery Cave and Museum Cave, both of which are full of Hindu statues and paintings. This complex was renovated and opened as the Cave Villa in 2008. Many of the shrines relate the story of Lord Murugan's victory over the demon Soorapadam. An audio tour is available to visitors.

The Ramayana Cave is situated to the extreme left as one faces the sheer wall of the hill. On the way to the Ramayana Cave, there is a 50-foot (15 m) tall murti of Hanuman and a temple dedicated to Hanuman, the noble monkey devotee and aide of Lord Rama. The consecration ceremony of the temple was held in November 2001.

The Ramayana Cave depicts the story of Rama in a chronicle manner quite effectively. The cave is well lit and allows the visitor to stroll leisurely viewing the depictions along the irregular walls of the cave. One might experience the feeling that one is strolling through the giant intestines of the mighty demon, Kumbhakarann, brother of King Ravana of Lanka.

A 42.7m (130 feet high) high statue of Lord Muruga was unveiled in January 2006, having taken 3 years to construct. It is the tallest Lord Muruga statue in the world.

The Limestone Formation in the Batu Caves
The limestone forming Batu Caves is said to be around 400 million years old. Some of the cave entrances were used as shelters by the indigenous Temuan people (a tribe of Orang Asli).

As early as 1860, Chinese settlers began excavating guano for fertilizing their vegetable patches. However, they became famous only after the limestone hills were recorded by colonial authorities including Daly and Syers as well as American Naturalist, William Hornaday in 1878.

Batu Caves was promoted as a place of worship by K. Thamboosamy Pillai, an Indian trader. He was inspired by the 'vel'-shaped entrance of the main cave and was inspired to dedicate a temple to Lord Muruga within the caves.
History

In 1891, Pillai, who also founded the Sri Mahamariamman Temple, Kuala Lumpur, installed the murti (consecrated statue) of Sri Subramania Swamy in what is today known as the Temple Cave. Since 1892, the Thaipusam festival in the Tamil month of Thai (which falls in late January/early February) has been celebrated there.

The 272 Steps Going Up the Temple Caves
Wooden steps up to the Temple Cave were built in 1920 and have since been replaced by 272 concrete steps. Of the various cave temples that comprise the site, the largest and best known is the Temple or Cathedral Cave, so named because it houses several Hindu shrines beneath its 100 m vaulted ceiling.

The Macaque Monkeys at the Batu Caves Site
There are various undeveloped caves which contain a diverse range of cave fauna, including some unique species, such as Liphistiidae spiders and Eonycteris and Rousettus fruit bats. The site is also well known for its numerous macaque monkeys, which visitors feed — sometimes involuntarily. These monkeys may also pose a biting hazard to tourists (especially small children) as they can be quite territorial.

The Dark Cave
Below the Temple Cave is the Dark Cave, with its amazing rock formations and a number of animals found nowhere else. It is a two-kilometer network of relatively untouched caverns. Stalactites jutting from the cave's ceiling and stalagmites rising from the floor form intricate formations such as cave curtains, flow stones, cave pearls and scallops which took thousands of years to form.

Nasi Lemak is my favorite Malaysian dish of coconut rice, which I can eat any time of the day. Wow!

Early that day, I headed for a grocery store in Malaysia to look for some Malaysian ingredients
or spices that I can bring back home. I plan to do some Malaysian cooking when I get back (just a plan, though) for I am pretty sure I'm gonna crave for these type of food from now on.

On the way to the grocery, I passed by a store selling lovely cakes that look so sooo delicious. I am attracted to the ones with lots and lots of fruits on top, even the tarts, just look at them.

Though for me, I can resist these cakes but not Nasi Lemak. I look forward to the next time I get to eat this dish. Nasi Lemak with Sambal Ikan Bilis , count me in anytime of the day.

Seven mistakes!

If I were to reminisce the things I did in my trip to Malaysia, there are seven things I am contemplating to re-do, or shall I say, I have 7 "should have's". Possibly, there are more than this number, but it is only 7 that I am willing to confess, if you know what I mean.

Count down please . . .

One. I should have checked out the promotions offered on Malaysian trips. My credit card company was giving 22% discount for the air fare, just travel Malaysian Airlines. Wow, and to think that I can pay the bill a month after. Sayang! (Sayang is a feeling of regret.)

Two. I should have just bought a SIM card at Malaysia so I can at least contact anybody there, my friend or a taxi driver. Well, the rest of you may not have this problem, but I did. I did not respect the need for communication. There was this instance when I went on my sight-seeing trip. It took me hours enjoying my time there, but I can't contact my taxi driver because my cellphone was useless in Malaysia. I brought it just for taking photos. I wanted to extend my stay there but we have to meet up at 3 pm. I was also to meet my friend at 6 pm for dinner and I can't move the appointment because no useful phone at hand. And you know what happened, my friend showed up at 10 pm. Hu, hu, hu. Sayang!

Three. I should have exchanged more ringgits. This is easy to explain. I wanted to buy some good stuff but no ringgits available, just peso. I was trying to stay on the budget but come to think of it . . . Sayang!

Four. I should have bought the items I liked at an instant when I saw them. It's okay to take a moment to think but buy them at the same day, right there. I did not do just that, and the consequence? I was not able to return to the place to buy it. Sayang!

Five. Good that I brought just enough clothing. I packed light to have space for the things I was able to buy. I had comfortable footwear, great, but I should have brought a good handbag . . . bag that is easy to bring along when walking and climbing and riding, etc. You know what would have been perfect? A bag that will allow things to get organized inside it, despite the stashing of papers and different items in it , would have been perfect. It is helpful to have one that will not allow the things inside to slide outside or else Sayang!

Six. I should have made the best of the night life. I was afraid of the being outside the house at night. My curfew for myself was 11 PM. I got tired going from one place to another, everyday. I really had to rest, but maybe not, right. Why sleep?

Seven. I should have brought my lap tap to save my photos and be able to send e-mail. I work faster and with much ease using my own gadgets. I was thinking the lap tap is heavy and that I may not need it. However, during the fight, looking around inside the plane, a number of the passengers do carry their lovable machines with them. Also, it is another medium of communication aside from the cellphone, right?

Seven Plus?
I should have flown to my friend in Miri. Going to Miri is a two-and-a-half plane ride, but then again, that may have been a bad idea. It may require much time and effort and usually, people are busy during weekdays. Can't just drop by on such short notice. (How I planned my trip to Malysia, the things I did right).

But you know what? I still enjoyed my trip to Malaysia, in spite of all my "should have's ". Life is what we make of it! (Tourist attractions visited: Safari, Genting, Malacca City, Batu Caves, A' Famosa, Melaka)

Malaysia, it is a place where my dream came true.

Safari Trips

My dear friend, yes, I could not have had this trip if not for my dear friend, whom I have not seen for a while but have kept in contact with, now and then. And what do you know, she is based in Malaysia, now and then too, way to go! (How I decided to go to Malaysia).

My last sight-seeing venture was allotted to what I considered my best. You would like it there too because others did, especially those who went with kids.

My favorite site was Malacca (or Melaka). One day, however, was surely not enough to cover all grounds, if I may say. Looking at the bright side, at least I got a taste of historical Malaysia and was able to join the Safari tour at A' Famosa. Goody!

I went to Malacca on my own in a taxi, or should we say teksi (Malaysian). It took me about 90 minutes from Kuala Lumpur to my destination. It is worth the drive. On my way there, I got to see beautiful palm trees lined up at the side of the road. Loved the scenery.

The taxi driver, Jack, and I were engaging in some chitchat once in a while. He was feeding me with local stories and a little of history. He was sharing profiles of his former customers and where they went, in case I was interested. He is cool guy, Jack. He is not a pain when he talked for he knew when he needed to stop so we can have silence, as I inhaled the view before me as he was driving.

I kept on looking at the lines and lines of dark green palm trees on hilly land at the sides of the road and the wide blue sky above. It was about 9 am and no glare of the sun. The weather was cool for it was drizzling.

I was telling Jack that I am worried I may not enjoy the Safari because of the rain. It was actually raining at Kuala Lumpur. I had to bring a very large umbrella, which of course I left with Jack. I do not want to carry much while walking. He assured me that it won't be so, no rain when we get to Melaka, and he was right.

At A' Famosa, I had my very own Safari moments.

The Menara Taming Sari is one of the known tourist attractions in Malaysia. It was made available to the public in 2008. It is a revolving tower which can be seen from afar, for it looms at 110 meters high. It was one of the great sites I visited aside from the Petronas Twin Towers in the heart of Kuala Lumpur (where Suria is housed) and Menara KL.

Menara Taming Sari is located at Bandar Hilir, beside Dataran Pahlawan Megamall. The structure was built using Swiss technology. It is the very first of its kind in Malaysia. Its revolving observation cabin is fully air-conditioned and provides a fantastic 360-degree view of the entire city of Malacca.

Malacca is known for its being a historical place in Malaysia, rich with stories and traces of Portuguese influence.

The cool viewing cabin is equipped with 80 seats. It revolves as it rises from ground level to the top of the tower. Each viewing session would be less than 10 minutes. The tower serves about a couple of viewing sessions every hour. The visitors get to enjoy a breathtaking view of the wonderful city.

How I love to return to Malaysia, especially at Malacca. The next time, I would like to ride the colorful rikshaw, (though I do ride the karitela and pedicabs in the Philippines) hahah.

Rickshaws were a common mode of transport in urban areas of Malaysia in the 19th and early 20th centuries. However, rickshaws were gradually replaced by cycle rickshaws (beca in Malay). Cycle rickshaws were also ubiquitous up to the 1970s in Malaysian cities. Since then, rapid urbanization has increased demand for more efficient public transport, resulting in dwindling rickshaw numbers. Today, rickshaws are operated mostly as a tourist attraction, with small numbers operating in Malacca, Penang, Kelantan and Terengganu.

Rickshaws (or rickshas) are a mode of human-powered transport: a runner draws a two-wheeled cart which seats one or two persons. The word rickshaw came from Asia where they were mainly used as means of transportation for the social elite.

Runner pulled rickshaws have mainly been replaced in Asia by bicycle rickshaws. They are also common in Western cities like New York City. In London they are known as pedicabs, and in San Diego they are called bike taxis. Lost&Found, Honest Men

"Jack, Jack, I am here. I am finished with my tour of this place. Where to now? But wait, can you take a picture of me as souvenir? Thanks so much Jack. Now, let's have a photo together. Ask that guy over there to take our photo."

"Yes, Miss." That is how Jack responds to me. I get flattered every time he says "Miss", 'coz that's the biggest lie, hahah. I am not single and definitely not young. I flatter myself, but the truth is Jack probably addresses all the females as "Miss". Maybe he should call me "Missed" instead.

Enough with that! Finally, I want you to meet Jack, my teksi (taxi) driver, tour guide, photographer, story teller, company and friend.

I was touring alone, as I have repeatedly been saying. I met Jack when I wanted to go to the Genting Highlands. He is the taxi driver I got on my third day in Malaysia. He requested, without any hesitance, that I rent his teksi for the day. He continued by saying that he has children and he wanted to earn a little more. He lured me by adding that he will bring me to different places in the city.

I like Jack because I can understand his English and whether his story is true or not, I felt for him so I agreed to his proposal. He was so grateful and always mentioning that "you gave me business, Miss, so I will take you to places I know you'll like and you can have your photos taken."

Hmmm. Jack knew what to say, he knows my weakness was souvenir photos, the message was probably painted all over my face, an excited tourist.

True to his words, we spent lots of drives together but he leaves me at my destination or just rests in his teksi until I finish my sight-seeing.

My final ride in his teksi was going to the airport for my departure.

At the airport, I was excited to go home. I was about to call my husband to inform him that I'll be home soon. However, as I searched my bag for my phone, I can't seem to find it. I started to panic when I realized I lost my phone. What a disaster. How do I tell my husband about this? You see, this is the second time I lost my phone. How humiliating. It also dawned unto me that all my photos were gone together with the cellphone. What a big waste of everything. No photo, no souvenir, no memories in print. How could have I lost it. I probably left it at the lobby or at my room.

I remembered Jack, I have his calling card. I immediately called him and asked him to check the place where I stayed. He said okay. Then I never heard from him again.

Before I was about to board the plane, I called him one last time. He announced that he found it in his teksi. I was so astonished and amazed at how things turned out. So, we made arrangements on how he is to give it to the office mate of my friend, who is to visit the Philippines the week after.

Jack did his part well for I got back my I-Phone with all the photos saved in its memory. Whew! With that, I saved Jack's good deed in my memory as well. I thank God for this miracle. This has truly been a memorable trip to Malaysia. Good hearts are available here.

Meeting New Friends

Can we have a photo souvenir guys? I seemed like a kid again. Joyfully, I threw this question to my new-found friends in Malaysia. Yup, they agreed. Got that good butterflies-in-my-stomach feeling getting to know other people at a foreign country. I was alone touring the place, so having company was most welcome.

I really wished I was with my family, but why ask too much. They can't make it due to my sudden decision to just go and they to have their own schedules and commitments to take care of.

So, I just made the most of it, trying to converse with the sweet people, even with few English words exchanged.

I discovered that happiness and excitement are indeed contagious. Meeting great people enhanced the place and my visit. Thanks!

The country is separated into two regions, namely the Peninsular Malaysia and the Malaysian Borneo, by the South China Sea. Malaysia borders Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and Brunei. The country is located near the equator and experiences a tropical climate. Malaysia's head of state is the Yang di-Pertuan AgongYang. This a term that is similar to King. An elected monarch, and the government is headed by a Prime Minister.

The name Malaysia was adopted in 1963 when the Federation Of Malaya, Singapore, North Borneo and Sarawak formed a 14-state federation.

During the late 20th century, the Southeast Asian nation experienced an economic boom and underwent rapid development. Economic growth during the 1980's and 1990's, averaging 8% from 1991 to 1997, has transformed Malaysia into a newly industrialized country. Because Malaysia is one of the three countries that control the Strait of Malacca, international trade is integral to its economy. At one time, it was the largest producer of tin, rubber and palm oil in the world. Manufacturing makes up a mjor sector of the country's economy Malaysia has a bio-diverse range of flora and fauna and is also considered one of the 18 mega-diverse countries.

Malays form the majority of the population of Malaysia. There are sizable ethnic Chinese and Indian communities as well. The Malay language and Islam are the official language and religion of the federation respectively.

Last Minute Accommodation

Yes, I am going! I hear her say.

I am going to Malaysia twice this month, was what my friend relayed to me. She said she'll be off a couple of days from then. I jokingly said, what if I went with you. She said yes but she would be on a business trip so I would practically be on my own. She confessed that her son was sick so she was not really sure if she'll go now or a week from now.

Going on a trip to a place I have never been. I did not know much about Malaysia except from TV and magazines and practically not so much about traveling, except about stories from friends and a short trip to Hong Kong, but that was with the family a long time ago. Even the airports have changed now, you know. I have become a Jurassic traveler, practically out-dated, that is.

Okay, what do I do first? No need for a visa, just a passport that is not expired of course. What do I need? I need a plane ticket and a place to stay. Wow, instant decision and last minute accommodation, and to think I am a newbie here. But I know everything is on-line now as long as you have the budget. Cash or card will do. I must think of going and not the not-going, to focus on the can do and not the can't do.

Where in Malaysia are you going? I had the sense to ask by now. She said, she'll be off to Kuala Lumpur. She showed me a photo of the Petronas Towers for she has been there a lot of times.

My friend decided to go only the day before the trip because she was worried about leaving her sick son. I would not go alone. If she postponed her trip it's okay, we just have to reschedule, but I just kept on hoping and hoping and praying.

She finally called that night to tell me, "Okay, you can sleep now, we will go to KL tomorrow morning."

Kulala Lumpur, Malaysia, a memorable place for me. My trip was worth all the anxieties I put myself through.

Little Cave? Batu Caves

Where to? This was Jack's question to me that morning. I told him we were to go to the Theme Parks. He suggested that we go to the Batu Caves but I have gone there the other day. By the way, Jack is my teksi (taxi) driver. Cool guy, that Jack. My driver, my tour guide, my photographer, my friend, but no discount on the taxi fare, Miss. Ouch!

You know what happened after we went to the parks of Kuala Lumpur? I decided to return to the Batu Caves. There is something about the place that draws me back. To the bat cave . . .

The place is the focal point of the Hindu festival of Thaipusam in Malaysia. In 2007, the festival attracted more than 1.5 million pilgrims, making it one of the largest gatherings in history.

The cave is one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside India, dedicated to Lord Murugan, ayan siya (that's him on the photo). The entrance, with the Murugan golden statue towering at 42.7 m high, was built in 1891 at Gombak district, Selangor.

Below the Temple Cave is the Dark Cave, with its amazing rock formations. It is a two-kilometer network of relatively untouched caverns. Both stalactites jutting from the cave's ceiling and stalagmites rising from the floor, which took thousands of years to form, shape intricate patterns like cave curtains, flow stones, cave pearls and scallops.

Wooden steps up to the Temple Cave were built in 1920 and have since been replaced by 272 concrete steps. Of the various cave temples that comprise the site, the largest and best known is the Temple or Cathedral Cave, so named because it houses several Hindu shrines beneath its 100 m vaulted ceiling. My target then was to be able to climb all the way up the 272 steps in the shortest time while staying alive. (Tipong Kamay ni Hesus steps ito sa Lukban, Quezon, 292 steps naman). Go Girl . . .

The limestone hill, which has a series of caves and cave temples got its name from the Sungai Batu or Batu River, which flows past the hill. (Aba more than 400 million years old ito, hindi na bata. Kaya pala "Batu" caves at hindi "Bata" caves). The hill is more than 400 million years old.

It is also the center of rock climbing development in Malaysia for the past 10 years with more than 160 climbing routes. Sayang, I was not able to try rock-climbing, stairs climbing lang.

To welcome you and bid you farewell are the Cynomolgus monkeys at the steps of Batu Caves, waiting for visitors to feed them.

Into the heart of Malacca City, I go! It was a long trip from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca, but it's worth the effort for this is where you get the taste of Malaysia's culture. Wow!

Malacca has adopted this cool slogan, Visiting Malacca Means Visiting Malaysia. It is rich in cultural heritage and bears several places of historical interest.

Malacca houses a number of modern shopping complex to attract more visitors to the state. This includes Mahkota Parade Shopping Centre at Plaza Mahkota, Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall (situated at the historical field of Padang Pahlawan, where Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al Haj announced the independence day of the Federation of Malaysia), Melaka Mall Shopping Complex (formerly known as Kotamas Shopping Complex), A' Famosa Safari and Theme Park and Plaza Melaka Raya at the Taman Melaka Raya.

Malacca is Malaysia's oldest port as well. Ayan ako sa may baba ng bapor. The place boasts of the richest history in all of Malaysia, perfect for learning more about the country's fascinating past.

Can you see that tower-like structure? It is Menara Taming Sari, the first revolving Gyro Tower in Malaysia. This is a must-ride as you take in the view way up there.

Over there is St. Peter's Church, the oldest Catholic church, built in 1710. It used to be frequented by Portuguese Catholics. Jack, my teksi (taxi) driver brought me here so I can pray. I thought he was going to show me the different mosques, for I am amazed by the mosques. I think we kinda not understood each other. Anyway, he was so proud of this very old church that he wanted me to see it.

Out to Monkey Island

A' Famosa, that's where I went.

I was ready to "pack-up and go", but as I scanned the site-map flier on my hand, I noticed I missed-out one more place, the Monkey Island. It would be a long walk towards the dock, I was talking to myself. You see you needed to ride a raft to get to the island. My allotted time was starting to diminish. Hmmm.

Nonetheless, why not cease the moment, I told myself. That's right!

I started walking and walking and walking . Nearing the dock area, I started to run to catch the ride. There was this group who just hopped into the raft that will be heading to the island.

Wait, but the raft proceeded to its task. Oh wow, I was left behind. Naiwanan ako.

I stopped running and started walking, slowly, then slower. and still slower. I was suddenly hit by loneliness. I felt really alone for I was walking on my own. Most of the tourists were watching the shows. I thought of my family. I wish they were there with me sharing my experiences. Sorry, but I just can't help it.

I then the lifted up my head and I felt myself making the effort to be happy. Why complain? Make the most of what I have. This is a dream come true, traveling and discovering new things.

When my turn came, I found myself getting on the raft and engaging in a simple conversation with the driver, oops, maybe the "captain of the raft" will be a better description. Of course, I asked him to take my photo, better to have a souvenir of this lovely woman, I mean lovely view.

I reached the island and behold, it is an empty island. Again, I am alone. Alone in a deserted island waiting for a pirate to cease me. Wait, that's another movie. Joking aside, I really had the island all by myself except for the staff. Guess what? I loved it!

Kuala Lumpur Accommodation

Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, is the largest city of Southeast Asia. It has a year-long sunny climate and a rich culture. Kuala Lumpur makes an attractive destination for countless of tourists all over the world. (Kuala Lumpur Tourist Attractions, Genting Highlands, Safari Trips)

KL, however, is more of a business spot than a tourist spot for a friend of mine. For the many times she has been there, she has not gone around to appreciate its majesty (possibly, just some visit to the shopping malls, of course. She is a "she" remember).

I just have to write something about her this morning. Hope it's okay. Just a breaker.

She is a young executive, with a pair of smiling eyes, a fair-skinned chinita, as others would describe her. She's been traveling Asia because of her work. She spends more time in Malaysia, even as compared to her stay in the Philippines, nowadays. She was lightly joking that she might as well be relocated there with the family, just so she could spend more time with the kids and dear husband.

How does she fit in my life's jigsaw puzzle? She is a spark in my life. What? Come again? Well, she comes to my life unannounced, just popping with good and bad news, with problems and solutions. She adds not only color, but graphics in my life. Together, we breathe creativity and entropy (hopefully in a good way) and we thank God for that.

Wacky elephants!

The kids were really ready to adopt them, handing out food to the large mammals and patting those heads with giant flapping ears and swinging snouts. The trained animals were shooting basketballs, kicking balls, riding scooters and just doing their thing, sitting, kneeling and standing on their two hind legs. They were goofy and lovable, the audience kept on clapping their hands for the animals' tricks.

I salute the trainers. They did a great job!

The elephant show made my trip to Malaysia a fun experience. It has been a long long time since I've been in a circus atmosphere. Being with the rest of the tourists was great. The kids' laughter is contagious. You, yourself would be feeling light, free and happy, just like the children. (My Safari Adventure)
